Introduction to NGOs and the Nonprofit Sector
Description
This course provides a thorough introduction to the nonprofit and NGO sector, with a strong focus on the African context. Learners will explore the legal and regulatory frameworks that shape NGOs, the spectrum of organisational structures – from community‑based organisations to large international NGOs – and the diverse funding landscape including institutional grants, diaspora giving, and social enterprise models. Through case studies drawn from across the continent, participants will gain a practical understanding of how NGOs are established, governed, and sustained. The course also examines the relationship between NGOs, government, and the private sector, and the evolving expectations of donors and beneficiaries. By the end, learners will be able to articulate the unique value of civil society organisations, assess the suitability of different legal forms for their context, and design a basic sustainability strategy. This is the starting point for anyone serious about building or leading an effective NGO in Africa.
